ST. PETERSBURG

Police are searching for a man in connection with a bank robbery from an ATM-only branch of a local bank on Wednesday. The man walked into the Washington Mutual Bank, 4250 Sixth St. S, just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and presented a note to a female employee demanding $1,700. The note implied the man was armed with a bomb and a gun, police said. The employee twice told the man she did not have access to the funds, which are only disbursed through ATMs at this branch of the bank. The man ran away from the bank and into parking lot of a nearby shopping center. The man is described as white, with brown collar-length hair, age 38 to 50 years old, about 6 feet tall and weighing 190 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray T-shirt and blue jeans. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective T. Harrison at (727) 892-5942 or Detective A.L. White at (727) 893-7263.

TAMPA

Verizon offers reward in thefts

Verizon Communications will give up to $10,000 for information that leads to the conviction of whoever stole equipment from the company. Between Feb. 19 and March 20, someone stole 10 stainless steel repeater housing lids, communications equipment worth more than $50,000, said company spokesman Bob Elek. The lids, which protect telecommunications equipment, could be resold for scrap metal, he said. It causes a public safety problem because cables were ruined during the thefts, cutting off phone service to residents, Elek said. The thefts happened in several areas of Tampa, he said. Verizon can be reached at 1-800-997-3287. Crime Stoppers is also offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information. Crime Stoppers can be reached at 1-800-873-8477.

Teenage driver slams into tanker

The 17-year-old was on spring break and apparently distracted Tuesday night as he drove west along Tampa Road, authorities said. Ahead of the teen, a fully loaded fuel tanker had stopped before crossing the railroad tracks near State Road 580. It was 11 p.m. Davin Dyslin, a Tarpon Springs High School junior, never slowed down, plowing his 1993 Ford pickup into the fuel truck at 45 mph, officials said. The tanker, carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline, sustained significant damage, but never leaked or caught fire. Dyslin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was seriously injured, officials said. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he remained in intensive care on Wednesday.
