'Sunward I've climbed'
AirFest returns to MacDill Air Force Base on Saturday and Sunday, and about 750,000 people are expected to attend over the course of the weekend. (It's free, after all.) Want to join in on the fun without getting lost in the crowd? Here's a guide to help you soldier through:

DON'T GET STUCK Gates open at 8 a.m. and the show starts at 9, but cars likely will be lining up outside the gate as early as 6, said Lt. Omar Villareal, a MacDill spokesman. That might seem extreme when the event's big draw, the Blue Angels flying demonstration, doesn't kick off until 3. But the early bird gets the parking space and avoids the crowds, said Villareal: "My recommendation is to get on base as early as possible." Once base parking is about 80 percent full, Tampa police will start diverting traffic to satellite lots and other offsite parking. So wear comfy shoes and prepare for a healthy walk if you arrive later in the day. BE UNDERSTANDING It's a military base, after all. Everyone is subject to being searched, as is every vehicle. Keep things flowing smoothly by leaving prohibited items at home. They include: coolers, alcoholic beverages, weapons, fireworks and large tote bags. Also, don't bring pets or anything you ride on wheels: bicycles, roller skates, skateboards, etc. You can smoke, but only in designated areas. TIPS FROM AN AIRFEST VETERAN David Sellers, 40, of Tampa has attended the event five times. He suggests: - You won't save too much time going home by parking off-site. It's much more convenient to have a vehicle handy. But carpool with friends if possible. - Make sure every member of your party, especially children, has a cell phone or at least knows where to meet if you get separated. It's an awfully big base. - Check out the aircraft displays early, while you still have energy. By midafternoon you'll likely be running out of steam fast. For "gee whiz" appeal, check out the F-22A Raptor, below, which Villareal called the military's most technologically-advanced aircraft. And step inside the C-5 Galaxy, left, one of the world's larger aircraft. Said Villareal: "You can probably play football on the inside of it. You can stick tanks in there, other helicopters. It's huge." DON'T MISS THESE BEAT THE HEAT Between the sun beating down and reflecting up from the pavement, "you're getting baked from both sides," Villareal said. Wear plenty of sunscreen, drink lots of water, and you'll likely want to bring sunglasses and a hat, too. Beach chairs and blankets also are allowed and recommended. Cameras also are allowed.
