Poet Gianna Russo is co-director of the creative writing program at Blake Magnet School of the Arts in Tampa. A lifelong Tampa resident, Russo also serves as an artist-adviser to the Hillsborough County Arts Council. Q: What's on your nightstand? Let me name what's on my pile. There's 100 Love Sonnets: Cien sonetos de amor by Pablo Neruda; Art of the Personal Essay by Phillip Lopate; Art & Love: An Illustrated Anthology of Love Poetry; several past issues of the Tampa Review; a novel, Charming Billy, by Alice McDermott; and Italian Days by Barbara Grizzuti Harrison. So, a poet doesn't always stick to reading poetry during her downtime? Actually, poetry is not necessarily my favorite genre. I love short stories. I also enjoy creative nonfiction. What creative nonfiction do you recommend? True Notebooks by Mark Salzman. It's excellent.
