Power of the pen

It's that time of year again. The humidity is headed upward, and the attention spans of area seniors are headed downward as their futures come into focus. Over the past few months, we staked out a slew of "signings" at high schools across the area. Here's a look at some of them:

Sara Grotz, Central

Sport: Volleyball

College: St. John's River Community College

Location: St. Augustine

Nuts and Bolts: Grotz was a Times honorable mention all-Hernando/Citrus player this season as a senior. She was an intimidating presence in front of the net, but likely will move to the right side in college.

Hilary Fiocca, Springstead

Sport: Softball

College: Pensacola Junior College

Location: Pensacola

Nuts and Bolts: One of the more versatile female athletes in the county, Fiocca was a three-sport star, leading the Eagles in basketball, volleyball and softball.

Corey Drummond, Hernando Christian

Sport: Football

College: Southwest Baptist

Location: Bolivar, Mo.

Nuts and Bolts: One of the key bricks in the foundation of the young Lions football program, he is the first football player from the school to sign an athletic scholarship. He also is the first Hernando Christian athlete to sign an NCAA letter of intent. Drummond and his father visited the campus during a winter ice storm that knocked out the school's power.

Kristen Wimer, Central

Sport: Volleyball

College: Polk County Community College

Location: Lakeland

Nuts and Bolts: One of the chief attractions for Wimer was the opportunity to play with her close friend, Noemi Rivera, who will be playing at PCCC after one year at Pensacola Junior College. Wimer, a first-team all-Hernando/Citrus player this year, visited several colleges before settling on Polk.

Cheyenne Sellers, Hernando

Sport: Softball

College: St. John's River Community College

Location: St. Augustine

Nuts and Bolts: A first baseman who provides a good bat at the bottom of the Leopards lineup, Sellers excelled at both volleyball and softball during her career at Hernando.

Tyler Baldwin, Ben Martucci, Drew Martucci, Hernando

Sport: Cross country

College: Florida Southern

Location: Lakeland

Nuts and Bolts: The top three runners on this year's Class 2A state runnerup team will remain together for college. Ben Martucci, the two-time Times' Hernando/Citrus Runner of the Year, finished second at state this past year with a time of 16:29. Drew, his twin, finished 11th in 17:06. Baldwin finished 13th in 17:12. Florida Southern finished 20th at the NCAA Division II championship in 2006.
