Unhappy Cantu to play for Durham
By MARC TOPKIN
Published April 4, 2007
NEW YORK - Disgruntled and demoted second baseman Jorge Cantu will report to Triple-A Durham in time for Thursday's season opener and will be focused and prepared to play hard, agent Steve Canter said Tuesday.
But whether Cantu plays again for the Devil Rays could be another issue.
Cantu responded to the demotion by requesting the Rays trade him, and Canter initially didn't want to address whether Cantu could put his hurt feelings aside to eventually rejoin them or how long he would be willing to stay in the minors. He contacted the Times later to say Cantu would play wherever he was assigned.
"Our request was firm. I think that sums it up," Canter said. "I think right now he's focused on going to Durham and working hard. He's made the trade request, and we're going to go from there."
Cantu has been in the majors since coming up in 2004 and was the Rays' team MVP in 2005. He had a poor and injury-marred season in 2006, has been working hard to rebound and was stunned at the demotion saying, "I am not a minor-league player."
Canter said his conversations with Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman did not include any deadlines for a deal. The Rays are not obligated to honor the trade request.
"The club did not provide a time frame," Canter said. "He's going to go there and work and turn this into something positive. He's going to get after it. He's a tough guy."
The Rays have had concerns about Cantu's defense, specifically a lack of range, and decided to send him down when they were comfortable that B.J. Upton could do a better job at second base. He also was considered for a part-time designated hitter role and lost out on that to Jonny Gomes. At Durham, Cantu is expected to be primarily a DH.
Canter disputed the Rays' evaluation of his client.
"The club said they moved Jorge off second base because of his defense. But Jorge didn't make an error all spring, and his range has vastly improved. So I question the validity of that," Canter said. "I think the facts speak for themselves."
Canter also suggested the Rays might miss Cantu more than they think.
"There are other leaders on the club, but I think this club is going to miss his leadership and his bat," Canter said. "He also was one of the club's most popular players and appreciates all the support of his fans. That being said, Jorge will go to Durham and turn this into something positive and with class."
This is a big year for Cantu (who has a $410,200 salary in the majors and $213,480 in the minors) because at the end of the season, he was to be eligible for arbitration and the big raise that comes with it. Eligibility is determined by major-league service time, so a long stay in the minors could force him to wait another year before cashing in.

Cantu just needs to get in the right organization. 2005 wasn't a fluke, but the injury and change in coaching hurt him in 2006. Gomes strikes out too much. I'd rather have a more consistent DH. Trading Cantu for pitching makes sense.

Jorge was hardworking and did whatever the time asked him to do, the WBC's didn't hurt him, but the team rushed him after his injury, he needs to try in AAA until his opportunity comes again, and it will sonner than most think. He's a RAY,let em PLAY

In 2005 Jorge had a great year.
In 2006 Jorge decided to play in the WBC...he got hurt and never came back to his 2005 production.
One year does not guaranty your place on the team!
The Majors have had many one-year-wonders.

Jorge is a fan favorite, all around good guy. The bottom line is the team is better off with Bj at 2nd, and Gomes as DH. Trade time...

DON'T WORRY JORGE. SOMEONE'S BOUND TO PULL ANOTHER HAMSTRING, HAVE STIFFNESS IN THE BACK, PULL A MUSCLE, SLIP AND/OR FALL, AND YOU'LL BE RIGHT BACK. WAIT AND SEE. GOOD LUCK.

im not a Cantu fan. Mexican players thrive to play in MLB, and a good year doesn't make him any VALENZUELA-HIGUERA type. He is where he belongs.

The guy did HORRIBLE last year. There is more upside with Upton at 2nd, he already showed us a bit of what he can do on opening day. Sure he was likeable, but likeable does not win baseball games.

Jorge is in AAA because he underperformed. They are better off with Upton. Trade Cantu and Baldelli for pitching.

He hit into the most double plays in the majors last year and his defense is average at best. They lost 100 games with him in the lineup the last 2 years so what's the big deal that he's not there? Now is the time to find out what Upton can do!

the guy has one good year and feels like he deserves an automatic roster spot? please. hit better than .250 and up your OBP to higher than .260 and you might have made it outright. learn to take some balls man, take a walk, up that obp, and come back

Cantu's agent says "the facts speak for themselves". The facts are in 05 and 06 Cantu had the worst fielding % of every AL 2b who played as many games as Cantu... to go along with his lack of range. Combine that with a sub-.300 OBP and you're gone.

Joe Maddon and his Ivy league baseballs minds have made some pretty poor decisions, add this one to the list. Keep up the culture of inadaquacy the fans are ust to it.

It is good to see the Devil Rays managment finally have some sack and don't put up with players that were once good but now actually make our team worse. Cantu was horrible last year take your .240 average and awful fielding to AAA where you belong.

as a Met fan I would like to see NY go after him. We have a 37 second baseman in Valentin, who played well last year, and he is backed up by 37 year old Daminen Easly. Mets would love to Cantu's bat coming off the bench. Pitching in return maybe?

How do you send an MVP to the minors - is that the Ray Way we heard about?...nice motiviation. Andrew Friedman shows us again that he really has no clue how to judge talent and stack a team. What a shame.

Glad to know "Lisa" and Derek" know more about talent evaluation than the Devil Rays front office. The Rays have no motivation for sending down Cantu other than the fact it will produce more wins now and in the future.

What most fans don't realize is that Cantu has been the WORST fielding 2B in the league for a couple of years now. He has't produced with the bat in awhile either. At least Upton has great range and solid potential. Sorry Jorge, no place for you

Cantu cant play second base. He might not have made errors all spring, but those games dont count. Its the same with the pitchers. They pitched lights out towards the end. First game of the season they bombed. 2005 for Cantu was a fluke. Get over it!

That's life in the big leagues. He hasn't proven anything since 05, when he was a very good (not great) second baseman. I like the move - BJ might have found a home at second, Gomes is a more dangerous DH, and that makes Cantu expendible. Trade him!

This should come as no surprise the Rays have no clue on how to manage a team and produce wins. Either way, for that kind of coin, he should shut up and play. He could have a corporate job and make $30 grand/year with 2% raises.

I hope Cantu destroys AAA pitching, The Rays are foolish to leave him off the MLB Roster
