Nothing but a sweep satisfies Sharks sprinter

BROOKSVILLE -The gun popped. The race started and Danielle Doucet's eyes were fixed on the finish line.

Gracefully but swiftly the Nature Coast freshman left the blocks and focused on her stride. Her goal always is first in all of her sprinting events - the 100, 200 and 400.

And in all but two races this season, Doucet has achieved that goal. On Tuesday, the Nature Coast sprinter kept her streak intact by sweeping her sprint events at the Hernando County Athletic Conference track meet. She even set her personal best - 59.25 in the 400-meter dash.

"I don't think second really is an option for her," Nature Coast coach Ryan Wilson said.

Doucet pronounced "Deuce-ette" admits she might not like it, but there are times when something other than first place can be a good thing.

It's motivation.

"It means I have something to work toward," Doucet said. "I have a goal to get better."

Doucet got some motivation earlier this season. In the Sharks' first meet, a multiple-team event at South Sumter, she came in third. Doucet ran behind a sprinter from Leesburg and another from Wildwood in both the 100 and the 200.

So in practice, she remembered that. She spent time working on her exit from the starting blocks. She concentrated on the distance between her steps. And she never lost her focus on the finish line.

In the next meet, she took first in all her events. She even defeated the Leesburg sprinter.

Doucet hasn't lost since.

On Tuesday, when she crossed the finish line in the 200, she leaned over to catch her breath. It was her last event of the day.

Several minutes later, she stood and smiled. There's just something about sprinting that makes her happy.

"It's so relaxing," she said, standing near the Central track. "It's fun. When you finish, you're relaxed."
