Emergency shelter needs linens, diapers

The Salvation Army emergency shelter in St. Petersburg needs blankets, single flat and fitted sheets, washcloths, baby diapers and baby wipes.

The shelter, known as the Red Shield Emergency Lodge, helps families that are homeless or nearly homeless and are in dire need of assistance.

It needs 50 blankets and 75 flat and fitted twin sheets. Linens, washcloths, unopened boxes or packages of disposable baby diapers, and baby wipes may be dropped off at the Salvation Army Social Services office, 1400 Fourth St. S, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Bulk donations of the above-mentioned items may be picked up by the Salvation Army. Car show, benefit

The St. Petersburg Dream Center, an agency that helps the homeless, will hold its annual car show and benefit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Pier, 800 Second Ave. NE. The event will include a band, DJ and children's events. Free. Car owners can register their cars by calling (727) 520-1909 or at www.stpetedreamcenter.com.


Fort De Soto talk

Discover the important role Fort De Soto played in the history of the United States during an hourlong workshop at 1 p.m. Sunday at the park. The fort's 12-inch mortar battery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The event is free. Registration is required by calling 582-2267. Fort De Soto Park is at 3500 Pinellas Bayway S in Tierra Verde.
