Participation in County Arts Festival is urged

Local students can enter art compositions at the Hernando County Fine Arts Council 23rd Annual Art, Craft and Music Festival. The event is May 5-6. Students compete for $100, $75 and $50 awards in three divisions - elementary, middle and high school. Emphasis is on visual art, but music, dance, drama and writing entries are also welcome. Students can enter more than once through the art department of their respective schools. Art teachers may contact Lois Hall at 544 5834 for deadline and entry information.
Challenger K-8 has Brain Bowl
Challenger K-8 will have a Brain Bowl competition on April 21 featuring area schools.
'Friday Night Live' at Wider Horizons
Wider Horizons School's annual "Friday Night Live" spring show is 7 p.m. April 27 at Springstead Theater, 3300 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill. Students write and perform skits, and teachers help refine the productions. "Students practice for less than three weeks and then the show goes on," said Dr. Domenick Maglio. "It's an adventure in creative theater." Every student in the school appears on stage at least once. Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for students.
International flair at Market Day
Powell Middle School's MicroSociety has International Market Day at 1 p.m. April 19. Students will demonstrate and market the products of their Micro industries.
Kindergarten is calling for some
Kindergarten Round-Up is coming to Suncoast Elementary at 4:30 and 6 p.m. April 23 and 25. Parents can bring their future kindergarten student to the media center for school registration and a tour. To register, each student needs a birth certificate, Social Security card, proof of residency (utility bill preferred), immunization records with doctor's signature and a physical (dated within one year of August 2007). Child must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2007. For information call the school at 797-7085.
SAC and Title 1 meetings schedule
SAC and Title 1 meeting dates include:
- West Hernando Middle School's SAC, Title 1 and PTSA meeting is 6 p.m. April 23.
- Challenger K-8 has its PTSA meeting at 6:30 p.m. April 26.
-Fox Chapel Middle School SAC and Title 1 Meeting is 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Instructional job fairs this month
The Hernando County School 2007 Instructional Jobs Fair is coming to Central High's gym. Secondary education jobs are featured from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and elementary jobs will be featured 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 21. Applicants for instructional jobs need to bring their statement of eligibility, transcripts and resume. Certification specialists will be on hand, principals will interview candidates and hiring recommendations can happen on the spot. Contact person is Jenea Harper at 797-7070, ext. 471.
