Task force to review county ordinances

The Citizens Ordinance Advisory Team will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the county administration conference room on the fourth floor of the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St.

The advisory team is a nine-member task force appointed by the Hernando County Commission to review existing county ordinances and recommend revisions.

Family Care Council to meet at DCF office

The Area 13 Family Care Council will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the Florida Department of Children and Families office at 1601 W Gulf Atlantic Highway SR 44.

Time to sign up for bridge tournament

The Hernando Bridge Association will host the annual Brooksville Sectional Bridge Tournament, April 19 to 21, at the Florida National Guard Armory, 16386 Spring Hill Drive, south of Brooksville.

The tournament is sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League, which will award silver master points to high finishers in five separate contests. Four of the contests will be "open pairs," two players who compete by playing duplicate hands and comparing the results. The final contest will be "Swiss teams," teams of four competing in a win-lose fashion.

All contests will be stratified so less-experienced bridge players will not compete directly against those more experienced.

Open pair events will be at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. April 19 and 20; the entry fee is $10 per event for ACBL members and $11 for nonmembers. The Swiss teams event will be at 10 a.m. April 21; the entry fee is $22 for ACBL members and $24 for nonmembers.

Door prizes will be awarded, as will prizes to first-place finishers. Breakfast, coffee and refreshments will be served each day, and lunch will be served on April 21.

Teams players needed for men's basketball

The Hernando County Recreation Department is seeking teams and players to join a new men's adult basketball league that will be starting soon. A meeting for coaches and players will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Activity Center, 205 E Fort Dade Ave.

Swimming, water exercises offered

The Hernando County Recreation Department will offer the following at the Heather Golf and Country Club pool, 7406 St. Andrews Blvd.:

-Water Aerobics/Water Exercise. Two sessions will be offered: June 5 to 28 and July 10 to Aug. 2. Lessons will be from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $20 per session.

-Swimming Lessons (Levels I, II and III), for ages 3 and older. Two sessions will be offered: June 5 to 28 and July 10 to Aug. 2. Lessons will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Level 2 and 3 lessons will be from 9:30 to 10:10 a.m.; Level 2 lessons only from 10:20 to 11 a.m.; and Level 1 lessons from 11:10 to 11:50 a.m. The cost is $48 for eight swim lessons. Class sizes are limited to eight participants each.

Youth concert to feature rock, hip-hop

A New Generation will host the third annual No Regrets Youth Concert at 7 p.m. April 14 at Weeki Wachee Springs, 6131 Commercial Way. Doors open at 6 p.m.

The concert will include performances by the rock group This Day On and by hip-hop artists Urban D and Los 1. Los 1, Carlos Ramirez, will also give a message regarding abstinence from premarital sex.

The event will include food and prize giveaways.

A parents night will be held in conjunction with the concert in the Mermaid Theater from 7 to 9 p.m. John Young of Pam Stenzel's Enlightened Communications will speak.

Church to host spring community picnic

Nobleton Community Church will host its annual spring family and community church picnic at noon April 12 in the church hall, 29071 Sentinel St.

Easter blood drive starts Wednesday

LifeSouth Community Blood Center will host a "Some Bunny Loves You" Easter blood drive through Sunday at the center, 12395 Cortez Blvd.

The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Blood donors will be served cupcakes and other sweet treats. Donors will also receive a gift item, a cholesterol screening and be entered into a drawing to win a super-sized stuffed bunny. (The drawing will be Saturday.)

Girl Scouts can twist, shout at sock hop

Girl Scouts of Suncoast Council's Brooksville Ridge Service Unit will host a Spring Fling Sock Hop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Coney Island Drive Inn, 1112 E Jefferson St.

The event is for girls ages 5 to 17 and a parent. The cost is $5, which includes a small drink, fries and chicken fingers (counter service will be available for additional food and beverage purchases).

There will be karaoke, hula hoop, twist and limbo contests, plus games and prizes. Girl Scout information and registration will be available. Girl Scouts who bring a friend who registers will receive a gift.

Register now for marriage prep class

The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will have its marriage preparation class from 6 to 9 p.m. April 24 and 25 at the extension office, 19490 Oliver St.

The class fulfills the requirements of the Florida Marriage Preparation and Preservation Act. Couples that complete the course get a $32.50 discount on their marriage license. Also, the waiting period upon applying for the license is waived. The class is approved by the circuit courts in Hernando, Sumter, Citrus and Pasco counties.

Couples must attend both sessions to receive a certificate of completion. The class costs $10 per couple. Registration is required by April 17.

Coast Guard Auxiliary offers two programs

The Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer the following programs at its facility at 4340 Calienta St.:

-Suddenly in Command, 7 to 9:30 p.m. April 17. This is a free program for spouses or other boat passengers who do not know how to operate a boat or what to do in an emergency. The class will include boating terms, radio use, GPS and safety in an emergency. Call John at 200-8325.

Mariner United Methodist Church will have a yard sale 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 13 and 14 at the church, 7079 Mariner Blvd.
