NORTH PINELLAS

11 BUSINESSES CITED FOR ILLEGAL ALCOHOL SALES

Half. That's how many of the 22 businesses checked by deputies sold alcohol to someone under 21, officials said Thursday. Pinellas County sheriff's deputies conducted their investigation Wednesday night with the help of underage volunteers. The businesses, mostly gas stations and convenience stores, were in Oldsmar, Tarpon Springs, Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor and Safety Harbor. "This type of violation leads to other types of crime," sheriff's Sgt. Jim Bordner said. "We will continue to conduct spot checks to ensure clerks are following the law."

OLDSMAR

Sign up, pay for rec classes on Web

Leisure Services, the department formerly known as Parks and Rec, has gone high tech. Recreation card holders can now use the city's Web site -www.ci.oldsmar.fl.us - to register and pay for classes and programs. First-time users will have to get a user ID and password the old-school way - via the phone. Call (813) 749-1260.

CLEARWATER

Officer, SUV driver still hospitalized

The police officer and the man who broadsided his cruiser early Wednesday remained hospitalized Thursday at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. Officer Scott Dawson, 43, a 16-year Clearwater police veteran, has a fractured vertebra in his neck but suffered no paralysis. His condition was unavailable. A police spokesman said Dawson has weeks of recovery ahead of him. David Brent Lloyd, 44, of Clearwater, who crashed into Dawson's cruiser, was in good condition. The wreck occurred at 2:13 a.m. Wednesday as Lloyd, driving an Isuzu Rodeo east on Rainbow Drive, drove through the stop sign at Hercules Avenue and hit the cruiser, police say. Both vehicles were destroyed. Police were still investigating and had not determined the speed of the vehicles. No charges had been filed.

Shelters need help clearing out cats

A day after more than 115 cats were rescued from a condemned home, the shelters taking care of them say they could use donations to help care for them or adopters to help cull their shelter population. The SPCA Tampa Bay, a nonprofit shelter in Largo, is housing 48 of the cats. Pinellas County Animal Services took in another 68 cats and two dogs. A kitten and three cats removed from the home were euthanized for health reasons, but the rest of the cats are settling in well, said Linda Britland, a field manager for the county. The legal status of the rescued cats hasn't been settled, making it unclear if they will be available for adoption. But both shelters have healthy spayed and neutered cats ready to adopt now - and say they could use the space. Call SPCA, (727) 586-3591, or Pinellas County Animal Services, (727) 582-2600.

When is St. Pete going to do a sweep? I know of three stores on 46th Ave who routinely sell to minors.....The giveaway is when they wait till theres no more customers, then they go up to the counter.
