Condo board loses fight over mezuzah 

Earlier this year, the Miami Herald reports, Laurie Richter's Fort Lauderdale condo association told her to remove the mezuzah from her door frame. A mezuzah is a cylinder used by Jewish people that holds biblical passages. The condo association's rules forbid anything on exterior common property. But Richter, a 28-year-old lawyer, balked. Christmas wreaths are okay, but not mezuzahs? The condo association board eventually said Richter could display her mezuzah. Not good enough for state Attorney General Bill McCollum, who told the board that all condo residents should have the same right. Now the condo board has conceded the fight - but only if residents follow proper procedures.

 

Would voters be more excited in November?

In the wake of a city election with a dismal voter turnout, City Council Chairwoman Gwen Miller on Thursday directed city attorneys to investigate moving elections to November. Miller said with Tampa elections coming just four months after state and federal elections in November, voters become tired of going to the polls. Waiting seven more months would give them time to muster enthusiasm for municipal elections. The elections would remain in odd-numbered years. Fewer than 16 percent of registered voters cast a ballot in the city's primary elections March 6.

Correction

Hillsborough County government has rescheduled a meeting to discuss improvements to Sheldon Road. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hillsborough County West Service Unit, 9805 Sheldon Road. Some regional sections, which are printed in advance, listed a previously scheduled date.
