Lottery offers shot at program

On a tight budget and looking for a summer day camp option? The Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department offers a Summer Fun Camp program for a one-time fee of $50 per child.

But good luck getting enrolled.

The camp is open to children, ages 6 and up, who are currently registered in the county's after-school program. The few remaining openings will be filled using a lottery.

Parents can sign up for the lottery from 6-8 p.m. April 25 and 26 at one of the more than 40 parks offering the summer camp. But they need not stay the entire time.

On April 27, parents can call the park they signed up to attend and find out their lottery status.

A list of parks offering the camp can be found on the county's park and recreation Web site, www.hillsboroughcounty.org/parks/recreation/recreationfacilities.cfm. In the activity drop box, enter "Summer Fun Camp." You can sort by ZIP code to find the park closest to your home.

If one child wins the lottery, his or her siblings will also be able to attend the camp.

Summer Fun Camp runs from June to August and will be open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Activities include field trips to theme parks, sporting events and shows. There will also be swimming lessons, games and arts and crafts programs.
