Q&A: Uproar prompts inquiry by China

China is investigating claims that it exported wheat gluten containing melamine, a chemical found in plastics and pesticides.

China said Friday that it is investigating allegations a Chinese company exported tainted wheat gluten used in pet food that has been linked to the deaths of more than a dozen cats and dogs in the United States. It was the first time Chinese authorities officially responded to the uproar that has resulted in a ban on gluten imports from the Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. and a U.S. recall of more than 100 brands of pet food.

What do I do if I own a cat or dog?

Check the list of recalled pet foods -- at least six companies have recalled pet foods and treats -- and make sure you do not have any in your cupboard. If you do, stop feeding it to your pets immediately. Return the food to the store where you purchased it and ask for a refund. Stores generally have a return and refund policy when a company has announced a recall. If your pet develops sudden symptoms -- including loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting -- contact your veterinarian.

What's the issue with the wheat gluten?

China says it is investigating the claim that the exported wheat gluten contained melamine, a chemical found in plastics and pesticides. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to focus on melamine as the suspected contaminant of the pet products, though Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, said it could be a marker for the presence of another, not yet known substance. Melamine previously was not believed to be toxic.

How did melamine get into the wheat gluten?

We don't know.

How many pets have died or become ill in the United States so far?

The FDA has confirmed about 15 pet deaths. However, the Veterinary Information Network, a group of 30,000 veterinarians and students, is doing a survey after its members sent in unsolicited reports of more than 500 illnesses and 104 deaths. The FDA has received more than 10,000 complaints.

How many more recalls can we expect in the days to come?

As the investigation proceeds, further recalls are possible. This week's recall of dog biscuits made by an Alabama company widened the scope.

With 71 million cats and 66 million dogs in this country could some of the deaths be of natural causes?
