North Shore Pool awaits 'sprayground'

ST. PETERSBURG - North Shore Pool's new look has pleased everyday swimmers and athletes in town for meets, but one gap remains.

The missing amenity on the pool's southeast corner will be present and hooked up by late summer, officials said last week.

It will become a shallow play area with water toys, not precisely a kiddie pool, but one likely to appeal to all who enjoy flying water and a good squirt.

The "splash pool," sometimes called a "sprayground," will be about 2 feet deep and will be built so users can simply walk in without using steps or a ladder. It will include water cannons and features that gush water.

Construction should start in about a month after remaining permit issues are resolved, said Mike Connors, the city's internal services administrator. An August completion date is expected.

City Council member John Bryan said he had expected the splash pool to be open for the beginning of the summer. "I've been jumping up and down about it" trying to push the job along, he said. The bidding process and cost issues delayed the timetable, he said.

The play pool was not part of the $3-million budgeted for North Shore renovations, which included a new warm-up pool, bleachers, offices and meeting space. Penny for Pinellas paid most of the cost, and the council last summer approved money from the sale of Weeki Wachee Springs to pay for the splash area.

It will be the second such play area in the city. The other is at the Childs Park pool.
