Three state college teams and one USF bowler advanced out of the USBC Intercollegiate qualifying rounds. Florida State University's men's team, both the UCF men's and women's teams and USF's Stephen Alessi got by rigorous qualifying games around the country last week. The teams will meet up with the top 16 in the nation at the Intercollegiate Team Championships April 18-21 in Wichita, Kan. Alessi will go to Huntsville, Ala., May 21-22 for the Singles Championships. Palm Harbor's Josh Guinand finished 16th overall at the Chattanooga Sectional, totaling 1,214 pins in six games for FSU, which had to overcome Ohio State and Michigan State in its regional. His teammates, David Beck and Norman Nolan, (1,232) tied for 10th individually for the Seminoles, who finished right on the team qualifying cut line at fourth overall behind third-place UCF and Shawn Deufel (1,252) and Scott Schultz (1,209) who finished eighth and 17th, respectively. Allesi finished fourth individually in Allentown, Pa. Michelle Carcagente (1,213) was fifth, Brigette Harrelson (1,185) ninth, Lindsey Coulles (1,183.11), Cass Carpenter (1,166) 13th and Stefanie Nation (1,138) 20th for the UCF women who came in second as a team and will have a chance to take on Lindenwood again. Lindenwood defeated the Knights last year in the finals to win the women's title. HIGH SCHOOL: Both spring high school leagues have wrapped up. Travis Vorbeck, Matt Florio, Jared Solomon and Jon Brady put together one of their better series of the season, a 627 last week to hold their lead and title in the Pinellas County League scratch division for Countryside No. 1. They led most of the season behind Brady's 203 average, fourth best among all. Ashly Galante finished with a 219 average for Tarpon Springs No. 2, and along with David Hinkle and Tommy Frain, gave Countryside a good push but finished second as a team behind the Cougars by 12 points. Aaron Morris, Blake Rasmussen and Mike Coneby of Palm Harbor University No. 1 finished third. Rasmussen posted the league's best game, a 266, and another Hurricane, Chris Grube, maintained a 209 average alongside Brittany and Stephanie Scanlon for PHU No. 3, which finished fifth behind East Lake's Allie Edgar, Louis Sadowski and Joe May, who finished with the boys top average of 211. BOWL FOR THE CURE: A check for $1,003,000 was presented to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure last week. It marks the first time bowling has contributed more than $1-million in a year to help the fight to cure breast cancer. PBA: With expectations at an all-time high, reigning PBA Player of the Year Tommy Jones' 2006-07 season was mostly viewed as a disappointment. By winning his 10th career tour title and second major in three seasons last Sunday, Jones served notice he is not going anywhere. Jones dominated the final round of the Tournament of Champions, knocking off defending champion Chris Barnes 279-238, in the semifinals before denying Tony Reyes with a 257-222 win in the title match. NABI: Mark Michel (Lutz) finished second and third at two Club 577 events, averaging 204 and 205 each while earning $140. And he threw his second 300. The next tournament stop is for Club 577 at Orange Bowl Lane on April 15. Jackpot is at $150, strikepot $65. Call (863) 667-4779 or visit centralflorida.bowlnabi.com. UPCOMING: The 70th annual St. Petersburg Bowling Association's City Tournament is at Liberty April 14-15 and 21-22. Entry forms are at all local centers or call (727) 399-2695.
