U.S. Democrat meets Brotherhood leader

CAIRO - U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., met a leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's largest opposition group, during a visit to Egypt on Thursday, U.S. officials and the Islamist group said Saturday. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has refused in the past to meet with the Muslim Brotherhood. But U.S. Embassy spokesman John Berry said Hoyer's talks were not a change in U.S. policy. The State Department and the White House had no comment.

 

U.S. diplomat makes a surprise visit

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA - The top U.S. diplomat for Africa urged Somalis on Saturday to leave behind 16 years of bloody conflict, warning the country has become "a haven for terrorists." Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer made a surprise visit to the Horn of Africa country on the sixth day of a fragile cease-fire between the government and Islamic insurgents. The truce ended a surge in fighting that left hundreds dead and forced thousands of residents to flee Somalia's capital.

 

Accidental explosion kills 16 people

CHENDUR, INDIA - A jeep carrying a gelatin-based explosive used for a highway construction project exploded Saturday in Chendur, a south Indian village, killing 16 people and injuring 22 more, a senior police official said. The vehicle had caught fire, and the blast occurred as the driver and others tried to choke the fire with sand, Inspector General K. Radhakrishnan said. Chendur is 80 miles south of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state.
