LARGO If you're waiting to see football greats John Lynch, Matt Hasselbeck, Ahman Green, Kay-Jay Harris, Todd Heap, John Reaves and Joe Jurevicius play a gang of motorcycle toughs on the big screen this fall, forget it. It's not going to happen. After the St. Petersburg Times published a story Tuesday reporting that the athletes were going to portray bad guys in a locally made movie called Scouts Honor, their agents started calling to say, "Not my client." An assistant producer had referred the Times to the film's Web site, www. scoutshonorthemovie.com, which included an outdated list of participating athletes. Seven had bowed out for various reasons, including surgery, a new baby and a trip to visit soldiers in Iraq, said writer-director Jim Fitzpatrick of Seminole. Still, there are a few tough guys. On Saturday, a scene was filmed at the Largo lockup, which was "guarded" by Mike Alstott and Matt Geiger. Popular teen musical hits stage Largo High School's drama department will perform High School Musical at 7:30 p.m. today and Friday in the auditorium, 410 Missouri Ave. The play is based on the Emmy-winning Disney movie about two teenagers worlds apart who discover their mutual love of music during a karaoke contest. Tickets are $10. Call 588-3758, ext. 196. Conference on child abuse today To raise awareness about child abuse, the Abuse Neglect and Dependency Committee will host a conference, Creating Balance in the Modern Age, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1199 Highland Ave. Topics include working with families who have severe mental health issues, restoring health and balance to traumatized children and their families, and child abuse indicators. Cost is $20. Call 544-3900, ext. 168. Florida-as-Eden myth exploration Art historian Mallory O'Connor will talk about the historical and cultural assumptions of the myth of Florida-as-Eden and the role artists have played in perpetuating that image at 7 p.m. today at Largo Library, 120 Central Park Drive. CLEARWATER Driver arrested in crash with cruiser A Clearwater man who broadsided a police cruiser last week, seriously injuring an officer, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving under the influence. Tests showed David Brent Lloyd's blood-alcohol level was 0.263 and 0.265 percent, more than three times the level at which Florida presumes impairment. Lloyd, 44, also was cited for running a stop sign and failing to wear a seat belt, police spokesman Wayne Shelor said. Police say Lloyd was driving an Isuzu Rodeo east on Rainbow Drive about 2 a.m. April 4 when he ran the stop sign at Hercules Avenue and hit a cruiser driven by Officer Scott Dawson, 43. Dawson, a 16-year veteran, suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck but no paralysis. He recently left the hospital and faces months of recovery, Shelor said. BELLEAIR Habitat project signup under way Volunteer signup for a Habitat for Humanity Pinellas County Women Build project starts with a pep rally from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Belleview Biltmore Resort & Spa, 25 Belleview Blvd. Call 536-4755.
