Top 5 current movies and upcoming releases

By Steve Persall
Published April 12, 2007

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1 Sarasota Film Festival - The ninth annual showcase of cinema and stars begins its 10-day run, worth burning the gas to enjoy.

2 Grindhouse - Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's violent tribute to 1970s exploitation flicks is nasty, nostalgic and a lot of fun.

3 The Namesake - Director Mira Nair skillfully traces the generation gap between Indian parents and their Americanized offspring.

4 The Hoax - Literary con artist Clifford Irving (Richard Gere) sells a bogus autobiography of tycoon Howard Hughes. Catch him if you can.

5 The Lookout - Joseph Gordon-Levitt shines as a brain-damaged man lured into a bank robbery scheme. Familiar material (Fargo, Memento) gets a neat makeover.
