Track and field Class 2A, District 9

Published April 12, 2007

Where/when: Berkeley Prep, 1 p.m.

Local teams: Pasco and Zephyrhills

The rest of the field: Berkeley Prep, Hernando, Academy of the Holy Names girls only, Jesuit (boys only), Nature Coast, Robinson, Tampa Catholic

Boys outlook: Zephyrhills' Sederrik Cunningham holds the most promise of the county's competitors in this district, with 100 and 200 speed that should put him into regionals with ease. Cunningham also is looking to bounce back from a disappointing finish at the Sunshine Athletic Conference meet in the triple jump, where he was third.

Hurdlers Andrew Patrias and Robert Aurie, Josh Perkins (400) and Mike Avadikian (800) could move on, but the longer the distances at this meet the tougher it gets as Jesuit has a very strong distance group and Berkeley Prep is tough as well.

In the field events, Zephyrhills' Andrew Smith shot putted 51 feet, 11.5 inches at the SAC meet, one of the top 20 throws in the state this season. He should advance to regionals and could bring home a district title.

Pasco's Demetrious Larry will contend in the high jump, where his best is 6-2 this year.

Girls outlook: Pasco's strength lies in its speed, with sprinters Savannah Hancock and Amber Ranson hoping to duplicate their third and fourth places, respectively, at the SAC meet. They will face stiff competition, however, from Nature Coast's Danielle Doucet, the Hernando County champ.

Ranson, who long jumps, also runs on the 4x100 team that won the SAC title.

Zephyrhills hurdler Lindsey Arnold was third at the SAC in the 110, her best event and best chance for the Bulldog girls to get someone through to regionals.
