YMCA gymnasts win trophies at recent meet

YMCA GYMNASTS WIN TROPHIES AT RECENT MEET

The Brandon Family YMCA gymnastics team came home from a March meet with three trophies. Two girls' teams won third-place trophies for best all-around performances, and the boys' team also took third place in best all-around.

The meet was held March 2-4 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

Individual gymnasts also stood out. Single-event winners included Lexi Blizzard (floor exercise), Sara Brummer (vault) and Victoria Schepisi (vault, balance beam). For more information about gymnastics at the Brandon Family YMCA, call 685-5402.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

Variety of horse events headed to bay area

It's a big week for fans of equestrian sports. Saturday and Sunday hunter-jumpers and pinto horses will be at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center at the state fairgrounds.

Then on April 20, American Quarter Horses brings competitors from around the state in flat and jumping classes.

The hunter-jumper and quarter horse events start at 8 a.m., and the pinto event starts at 8:30. Take the Orient Road entrance into the fairgrounds. Parking is free.

RUSKIN

Festivals range from pets to tomatoes

Ruskin gears up for a trio of events in three weeks. The Second Annual Ruskin PetFest, sponsored by the St. Petersburg Times, runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21 at Dr. Ott's Off Leash Dog Park at SE 21st Street and SE Third Avenue.

PetFest promises a smorgasbord of treats and treasures for dogs and cats. For more information, call 661-2455.

The Ruskin Tomato and Heritage Festival is May 5 and 6. The Queen Pageant has six age groups from 2 to 19.

Eligible contestants must live in Ruskin, Apollo Beach, Gibsonton, Riverview or Wimauma. The entry fee is $20, and applications are due April 20. Call 645-3808.

Finally, it's the Ruskin Heritage Street Fest on May 4. The event along NE Second Street includes a fish fry and games for children.

SUN CITY CENTER

Orators to speak out at Toastmasters event

Orators from around the Tampa Bay area will try to best each other in a Toastmasters contest on April 14.

Chapters in Valrico, Sun City Center, Ruskin and Plant City are sending speakers to a contest starting at 9:30 a.m. at Community Hall, 1910 S Pebble Beach Blvd. The $5 admission price includes a continental breakfast. Call 633-1523.

Fair offers tips, products for parents

Moms and expectant parents are welcome at the Breastfeeding and Maternity Fair, which draws health professionals who will share knowledge and tips on infant care.

The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Babies R Us, 11201 Causeway Blvd., offers a chance to check out a range of products for breast-feeding moms and a video on nursing. Call 685-7899.
