Vote on state money for stadiums stalls

TALLAHASSEE - A rivalry between two Miami lawmakers stalled a vote Tuesday on a proposal to spend nearly $100-million in state tax money for three public sports stadiums.

Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, put the bill on hold rather than debate amendments that would have increased the sports subsidy to $180-million for the three teams. Those amendments were filed by Sen. Alex Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, to a bill sponsored by Sen. Rudy Garcia, R-Hialeah.

Both Miami lawmakers are seeking to secure elusive state money to help pay for a new stadium for the Florida Marlins, who play baseball in a stadium designed for football.

Garcia's bill (SB 544) would provide one-time grants of $32.6-million to local governments to make stadium upgrades for the Marlins, Orlando Magic and Tampa Bay Lightning.

"If the amendments were adopted, it would have a huge financial impact for recurring dollars that we do not have," said Fasano, who favors Garcia's proposal.
