Bridge to close 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday

TREASURE ISLAND The Treasure Island Causeway Bridge will be closed Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. for construction on the south span of the new bridge. Westbound traffic will be turned back at 79th Street. Eastbound traffic will detour at 104th Avenue, except for local traffic to the Treasure Island Yacht Club and Paradise Boulevard. Detour routes include the Madeira Beach Causeway to the north and the Corey Causeway in St. Pete Beach to the south. Thursday's closure won't affect boating traffic, however, the channel will be closed to boaters on April 26. Mariners requesting information on the status of channel accessibility can call the Treasure Island Causeway Bridge Tender Control Room on Channel 9. ST. PETERSBURG Dancing legend will be on campus Friday night Harlem Renaissance figure Frankie Manning, 92, considered a dance legend, will appear at 7 p.m. Friday at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg. Davis Hall, Room 130, at 140 Seventh Ave. S. Manning's awards include a National Heritage Fellowship in 2000 and a Tony for choreography in the Broadway show Black 'n' Blue. PETERSBURG Volunteer program plans recognition event The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will hold its 30th annual Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday at the Coliseum, 535 Fourth Ave. N. Nearly 1,000 Pinellas County seniors will be honored for their volunteer efforts. The public is invited to join the celebration. Reservations are required. The cost for nonmembers is $15. PETE BEACH Walk will help with bills for paralyzed teen A 3-mile "Walk for Joe" to benefit Joe Kolb and his family will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the TradeWinds Island Resort in St. Pete Beach. Joe, 17, is the youngest son of Largo boys soccer coach Gary Kolb. He was paralyzed from his chest down last year when he fell on a submerged jetty at a local marina. The walk will help with the cost of Joe's medical bills. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and is $25, which includes a free commemorative T-shirt.
