Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Hartnett, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Suncoast Squadron, has been awarded the regional Cadet of the Year Award for 2006. Hartnett is sophomore in the IB program at Palm Harbor University High School and plans to seek an officer's career in the Navy or Marine Corps. He is the son of Stephen and Kathleen Hartnett of Clearwater. * * * Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Johnson, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Suncoast Squadron, has been promoted to petty officer 1st class as of November 2006. Johnson will graduate this June and plans to pursue an officer's career in the Coast Guard after he completes advanced emergency medical technician training in California. He is the son of Christopher and Barbara Johnson of Clearwater. * * * Airman 1st Class Patrick Gray graduated with honors from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. During six weeks of training, Gray studied the Air Force mission, organization, military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations. Gray also completed advances technical training in computer systems technology. He has been assigned to Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. He is the son of Howard and Julie Gray of Dunedin, and grandson of Dr. and Mrs. Douglas W. Carr of Clearwater and Dr. and Mrs. James B. Gray of Florence, S.C. Gray, who served nine years as a Florida Civil Air Patrol cadet, is a 2003 graduate of Lakewood High School and its Center for Advanced Technologies magnet program. * * * Marine Corps Pfc. Travis Tornga has been deployed to Iraq as a member of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C. Tornga is the son of John and Debra Tornga of Dunedin. He is a 2003 graduate of Dunedin High School. * * * Army Pfc. Matthew Wachter has been deployed to Iraq. A member of the 15th Military Intelligence Battalion, Wachter is the son of Sabrina Wachter of Palm Harbor and the grandson of Sandra Wise of Tarpon Springs. He is a 2004 graduate of Tarpon Springs High School. * * * Cadet James Chulla recently completed a eight day seamanship course on Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada and Arizona, put on by the Coast Guard. Chulla, of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Suncoast Squadron, was introduced to the fundamentals of small boat driving, navigation (traditional and electronic), global positioning system and recreational boating safety, while living and working as crew member on a houseboat. Chulla was one of 100 cadets from across the country chosen to attend this spring training. He is the son of Nancy Chulla of Clearwater and a student at Highland Christian Academy in Clearwater. * * * Air Force Airman Brandon R. Schwing graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During six weeks of training, Schwing studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Steven Schwing of Largo, and Brenda Schwing of South Milwaukee, Wis. Schwing is a 2004 graduate of South Milwaukee High School.
