U.S. denies access to student loan data

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration has put a federal database containing sensitive financial information about college students off limits to lenders - at least for now. Typically, lenders and guarantee agencies have access to the database to help determine the eligibility of an applicant for federal student aid. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings said in a letter Tuesday to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass, that the department had noticed an uptick in the usage of the database by lenders, loan holders and guarantee agencies. Such activity could indicate the system is being mined for potential marketing data, something that isn't allowed. Kennedy had sought the suspension after a Sunday story in the Washington Post about the potential misuse of the database.
