ZEPHYRHILLS - A 25-year-old woman who was walking along U.S. 98 was killed in a hit-and-run accident, according to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Deannie M. Gilbow of 36801 Conley St. in Zephyrhills was just south of U.S. 301 when she was struck by an unknown vehicle that drove away.

Troopers responded to the call about 7:34 a.m., according to reports.

Margaret Thomas, 39, of Brooksville said she saw a woman just after midnight Monday, walking along U.S. 98 wearing jeans and black work boots.

This morning, she saw troopers removing a body from the area, and saw the same black boot on the woman.

"It's a dangerous road and was so absolutely dark last night," Thomas said.

Donna Dailey, 66, has lived next door to Gilbow for the past year-and-a-half.

She said Gilbow was a waiter at the Village Inn in Zephyrhills, but had recently quit to start working at Sonny's Bar-B-Q.

Gilbow had a 6-year-old son, and shared custody with the boy's father, Dailey said.

"She was really likable," Dailey said. "She loved life, she was a go-for-it gal."
