Homages to the art of language

April is National Poetry Month and there are several gatherings for those wanting to share their limericks, odes, rhymes and sonnets or just take in the poetic musings of others.

Pasco-Hernando Community College is hosting the fifth annual Celebration of Poetry from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Room A-139 at the Brooksville campus, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd.

Students and the community are welcome to participate in open mike readings.

Refreshments and a door prize will be provided by PHCC's North Campus Student Government Association.

The Pasco Arts Council, 5744 Moog Road, Holiday, is sponsoring the Jacaranda Poetry Festival at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Stazja McFadyen, an award-winning poet and author of Garland, will be the featured guest along with open readings by local poets.

The winners of the Jacaranda Poetry Contest will be announced. Cash awards will be given to the three top winners and five honorable mentions will be awarded.

There will also be a Student Pottery Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring art for the garden and other handcrafted clay items.

A Poetry and Karaoke Coffeehouse for teens will be held at 7 p.m. April 25 at the South Holiday Library, 4649 Mile Stretch Drive.

Poetry reading with Pulitzer Prize winner and former Poet Laureate Ted Kooser will be held at 8 p.m. April 26 at the University of South Florida Theatre Centre, Studio 120, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa.

A public student performance of Kooser's work and audience talk back with Ted Kooser will be held at 8 p.m. April 27 at Studio 120. For information, call (813) 974-2323.
