Deputy recruit fired, accused of lewd act

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has dismissed deputy recruit Kyle Free after a woman filed a complaint last week with the office saying she had "observed him doing something lewd" while off-duty, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. Carter could not confirm Free's age or address late last night, and would not elaborate on the incident or say whether criminal charges would be filed.

"Internal affairs is still investigating it," she said.

School Board chief makes apology

The letter to Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio came on the official letterhead of the Hillsborough school district. A district secretary typed the note, and School Board Chairman Jack Lamb signed it.

Oops.

Lamb wrote to protest a high water bill owed by his condo association. But district policy bars employees and board members from using public equipment for personal use, including official stationary and a secretary's time.

Lamb apologized profusely after the story first was reported in Wednesday's Tampa Tribune. He explained that his home printer was broken; he brought it to the School Board offices and asked for the secretary's help as a favor as he rushed through a to-do list before leaving town. Lamb vowed it won't happen again.
