New Century Opera opens a brave production this weekend with Wagner's Das Rheingold in an English translation of the German libretto and a piano arrangement of the score, which usually has an orchestra of about 100 musicians. It is the first of the four operas in Wagner's mighty Ring cycle, setting the stage for all that follows with the musical saga of Rhine maidens, the greedy dwarf Alberich, Wotan and the other gods and goddesses, and the giants who build Valhalla. Todd Donovan, portraying Wotan, heads a cast of 17, and direction is by Constantine Grame. George Konstantinidis painted Das Rheingold, shown here, for the production. There are performances at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday and April 27 and 29 at the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center. $14, $16. (727) 942-5605.
