Smokers, keep your butts all to yourselves
By ROBYN BLUMNER
Published April 22, 2007
It happened again just a few days ago. At a stoplight, a disembodied hand dangled out the window of the car ahead, holding a cigarette. The cigaretted hand moved inside and outside the car as its female owner puffed away. Then, as inevitably as finding an earwig under a damp rock, the exhausted butt was dropped out the window.
This scene can ruin a perfectly good drive. As tolerant as I try to be, the littering smoker is the one person for whom I believe no punishment devised by man is too cruel. They all should be strung up by their short hairs. Or at least shouted at loudly.
What kind of person does this? What kind of brain justifies the act of throwing any litter out a car window, never mind a lit stick that could set something on fire? What exactly are they telling themselves?
It can take up to 20 years for a cigarette butt to become one with the Earth, so don't give me "it's biodegradable." In the meantime the rest of us have to look at that ugly, stubby, piece of garbage lying in the street, or we have to pay someone to pick it up.
In researching this peeve, I found it hard to believe that not a single federal government agency tracks America's litter problem, not even the Environmental Protection Agency. The best we can do to understand its breadth is to examine some organizational and state findings.
Every year, the Ocean Conservancy sponsors an International Coastal Cleanup, during which volunteers from 100 countries pick up tons of debris along the world's shorelines. In 2006, 29 percent of the trash removed was smoking related.
I remember vividly being at a Florida beach a few years back, putting my hands in the cool sand, just to enjoy the feeling, and lifting up cigarette butts as I pulled my hands out. Someone took a public space and made it their own trash pile, then left. I'm guessing that these are the same people who fail to appreciate what they really look like in a Speedo.
Despite my civil libertarian leanings, I applaud Sarasota County for considering a smoking ban or designated smoking areas on its beaches. So many smokers litter with such uncaring abandon that they have forfeited the right to share these public recreation areas with their habit. In 2000, volunteers in that county picked up 32 pounds of cigarette butts on the beach. The world is their ashtray.
And it is not just the debris. On more than one occasion I have had to pack up and move to another area of a beach to avoid the smoke whiffed by someone nearby who decided to pollute the air for everyone.
I've never been a smoker, so I don't understand this umbilical attachment to something so nauseating, though I do have some compassion for addicts of any stripe. But where my patience runs thin is with this sense of entitlement that so many smokers seem to have. I no longer lean back in my seat on an airplane because it is likely to impose on the person sitting behind me. Smokers, though, have little concern about who might be in their line of smoke. They puff away while walking down a street, their smoke streaming behind them into the face of the poor sop in the rear. Nice.
Anyone who thinks I am unfairly picking on the litter of smokers, since there is so much other debris tossed into the streets by big lunkheads, should take a look at a survey done by the state of Washington. The 2004 study found that cigarette butts were the No. 1 most littered item, at 480-million per year. It hardly seems possible, since the state has only about 1.2-million smokers. But Megan Warfield of the state's Department of Ecology assured me it's true.
Warfield says that in follow-up focus groups, smokers excuse their behavior by saying they throw the butts out the window because they don't like the smell in their car. "I think that's so ironic," Warfield says. She also notes that the state has had tremendous problems with brush and forest fires started by tossed cigarettes - an act that now carries a fine of $1,025.
When I see someone drop a cigarette butt on the ground I have an autonomic reaction whereby I ascribe a long list of other loathsome attributes to that person - selfish jerk being the kindest. They obviously care about as much about the health and beauty of the planet as they do their own.
One day we will find a cure for tobacco addiction and this filthy habit will be easy to kick. Let's just hope the other filthy habit dies along with it.

Thanks Melissa for actually disposing of your butts appropriately. Too bad you're in the minority. All beaches should ban smoking, due to the harmful environmental impacts of butt litter & the annoyance of other beachgoers

I totally agree with you on this topic. Smoking is gross and they shouldn't be littering and getting away with it so easily. Too many times I've stuck my hand in that sand and pulled out a surprise I never wanted.

I agree. Tossing butts is littering; persons doing so should be fined accordingly.

If you all want to take some action go to www.litterbutt.com this website allows you to report litterers and in participating states sends them letters telling them they have been caught and what the potential fines are in their state.

Marcia - learn to spell you would be more effective. And everyone - not only smokers - should be more aware of what they 'throw' out onto the ground.

Right on !!!I can't believe the butts that are everywhere - and noone gets in trouble. There should be a fine and a tax put on the cigarettes to help cover the cost of clean up along our highways, city streets, parks, beaches!

I am a smoker & I am one of very few people that do not throw my butts out on the street, or anywhere on the ground. Butts are not only a fire hazard to our forest, they are dangerous for our wildlife. Butts kill birds and fish.Environmentally Aware

I smoke, non-filtered. From my front gate to my front door there are 2 ashtrays and yet visitors toss the butts in my yard. They also have emptied the car ashtray in my driveway. If you litter from my car you WILL get out and clean up, or walk.

Look online at some of the cigarette butt bumper stickers and maybe we will all have the chance to pull in front of the litterbugs so they can read it and possibly think twice about it!

You took the words right out of my mouth. I wish all states would have a fine for littering of cigarettes. I also agree with smoking bans in public places - Nothing like trying to take a deep breath of fresh sea air and choking on smoke instead!

Is there any difference in the impact of a cigarette butt or a drinking straw?
As a smoker I know that the filter does not do anything per se. Perhaps there should be a petition the tobacco companies to create a truly biodegradable filter.

As a former smoker, I absolutely hate cigarettes. Thank god (or myself) that I pulled my head out of the ashtray and quit! And, I always picked up my butts and used my ashtray-but so many 'butt'heads arent that responsible for themselves.Poo on them!

I agree that smoking is offensive, so I am sure not to do it in close proximity to others, but NOT in my house for my children to breath. I do not throw my butts on the ground and often find myself picking up handfulls of them after breaks at work.

When someone drops or flicks their cig butt near me, I usually say 'Hey, you dropped your cigarette'. It usually catches them by suprise, then they realize what I've said and get quite angry. Its humorous if anything. Butt heads will be butt heads.

Ms. Blumner is right on the mark. The right to breathe clean air preempts any so called right to smoke. Smoking should be prohibited everywhere except within the confines of a single family private residence.

Once in traffic someone threw a butt out his window and it landed in my passenger seat burning a hole in it. Is it too much to ask that you not litter and keep your smoke to yourself? I am amazed by some of the comments by the smokers! So defensive.

To everyone in denial, this is not about bashing smokers...
It is about filthy litter, of any kind, that ruins our beautiful earth. Litter that can burn down or trash a forest. It has nothing whatsoever to do with perfume. WAKE UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marcia.Yes we blame smokers for littering butts and their second hand smoke. Smokers blame their thoughtlessness and addiction for the same. Some even try to balme the tobacco companies. Time to be a big girl. SMOKERS CLEAN UP YOUR ACT-STOP TRASHING FL!

Teri-I have done beach cleanup. Why are you justifying what the smokers do? Marcia-Good luck but you are in the denial stage and do not really want to quit. Charlotte-your husband is an addict who is selfish. Keep your second hand smoke. Anyone else?

Charlotte-your husband is selfish. He is willing to risk cancer and leave you a widow. That simple. I refuse to date anyone who smokes (yes I broke up with people when I found out they did). Now lets here you smokers try and defend yourselves.

Oh, holier than thou, when you found butts in the sand, did you pick them up, walk 100 yards to a trash can to dispose of them, or were you just as lazy as whoever left it there first? Let's make more stupid laws! We don't have enough yet.
