Holmqvist still No. 1?
He has improved, but it's unclear who will be next year's top goalie.
By DAMIAN CRISTODERO
Published April 23, 2007
TAMPA - Johan Holmqvist is a much better goaltender than he was at the start of the season.
Said so himself, as did goaltenders coach Jeff Reese.
"Technically, he's more patient," Reese said. "He has adjusted to the speed of the game."
But did he prove he is next season's No. 1?
"I hope I proved I could play," Holmqvist said after making 23 saves Sunday. "It's been a pretty good year, but I don't know."
Neither does John Tortorella.
"There's more to be answered," the coach said. "You don't just deem a guy No. 1. He has to gain some experience, and I think this is a huge building block for him. We'll just see how it goes in training camp."
Holmqvist, 28, showed some brilliance while going 27-15-3, and his ability to put bad games behind him demonstrates a strong will. But he needs to be more consistent, evinced by his .893 save percentage.
And he has to be more cognizant of his positioning. He was burned numerous times on short-side goals to the glove side. It happened again Sunday when Brian Gionta picked a corner on what was a stoppable wing shot for a 1-0 first-period lead.
But there also was this: a terrific save on Patrik Elias, alone in front of the net with 1:51 left in the first, to preserve a 1-0 deficit; and his dramatic save on Travis Zajac's breakaway with 1:22 left in the second to keep it 3-2.
Quite a difference from Game 1 when he admitted his emotions got the best of him and he allowed three questionable goals in a 5-3 defeat.
"It was like I wanted to do well too much, instead of going out there and being relaxed and enjoying it," he said. "I was too pumped up."
While New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur was loose.
"To see how relaxed he is is a good experience for me," Holmqvist said. "It's something I'm learning, too."
Holmqvist, who made $600,000, is an unrestricted free agent. Assuming Marc Denis is not in the team's plans, Holmqvist is, for now, Tampa Bay's only NHL-tested goalie.
"He had a great year," defenseman Dan Boyle said. "Other than that first game, he showed he could be a No. 1 guy. He proved it to the rest of us when he withstood that pressure."
Holmqvist said he just wants a chance to exhale.
"Right now I feel kind of empty," he said. "The season is over. It's tough. I don't know what's going to happen. But I know I can play this kind of game."

Hey while your at it why don't you dig up Evgeny Konstantinov up from Russia, give him another shot. I really don't believe you can proove yourself in a total of three games in 2003 and 20 seconds in 2000. He couldn't have been good!

Lightning should have never gotten rid of Nikolai "Bulin Wall" Khabibulin. He saves the hopes of the Stanley Cup in the last two minutes and they let him become a free-agent. John Grahame as starter, wonderful idea, while your at it bring back Puppa

I agree with you, Ali. We have excellent "offensive"(rushing) defensemen, like DB,Kuba,O'Brien, and Ranger.Except for Pratt, nobody stays back to hang out with our goalies. If one D rushes, the other needs to cover(They often don't)It cost Ramsey's job!

I really think that Holmqvist can develop into a great goalie. He just has to work hard. And for the people that say that tampa's goalies arent good, it helps if you have some helpful defensemen (I'm not putting down our defensemen either)

Ashley- You might want to learn how to read (and write) better. I've been a huge supporter of O'brien all season. He was a great pick up. I have played hockey-lots of it! I'm really not that fat( well maybe a little).

We can all set back and say what we want about who should go and who should stay, but this fact remains, The ENTIRE team had a great year, and ALL of the players should be complimented on their level of play.

Not only should he (Holmqvist) be guaranteed the position, but he should also recieve a significant pay increase, his record during the regular season alone should attest to that.

So im felling that Marc Denis should be traded? He's good enough to get a solid defensemen and maybe a decent 3rd liner.

Our defense wasn't good and our goalie sucked, not a good combination. He needs to learn how to stay on his feet, and maybe try using his glove to catch the puck. With all that said, he should still get the first shot at starting.

You people that write torts and feaster need to go are CRAZY. Two guys that turned this franchise around. The main problem is the defense wich will be addressed in the off-season. Homer should be fine with ramo. BRING BACK ARTUYKIN< PLEASE!!!!!

Cindy- We already have more D men like Boyle and Kuba ( in Ranger & O'Brien). All of these D-men are good OFFENSIVE defensemen. Somebody needs to stay back and play D( Pratt was pretty good at that as his - showed).

I am a major Bolts fan! I also hate the blame the goalie game. It takes more than one player to keep the puck out of the net. Homlqvist has been rock-on! He deserves a full season to prove himself. Keep Holmqvist! Get more defensemen like Boyle&Kuba.

Holmer has done a great job compared to Denis who doesn't know how to close his legs. I agree our defense is a lil shaky but that will turn around next season. Bye Bye Sarich. Please keep Holmer, Ranger and O'Brien. They're awesome!!

Only holes to fill are 2nd and 3rd line scorers - O'brien is a work in progress and if he develops his shot he could be dangerous but Holmer is going to be great if they keep him - Ward was impressive can't wait to see him for an entire season..

In all honesty, it should be said that lightning defensemen struggled in the games they lost in the playoffs. Even Boyle appeared shaky with passes, and Sarich certainly as well. I think Holmer's record speaks for itself - TBL, keep Holmer!

Go Holmqvist!! He won more than a few games for us. Anyone can use improvement, but we wouldn't have made it to the play-offs without him. Remember-the goalie is the LAST line. There were 5 guys ahead of him. It's a team sport!! Can't wait for Oct

Personally I like Holmer. Watching the other teams in the playoff's it is so evident that they need to work on their other lines. DON'T BLAME HOLMER. It makes me mad also when the goalies are blamed. The team consist's upon MORE then just the goalie!

Ron-you nailed it.Hopefully Stewart,Jones,& Ramo will contribute significantly.I'm rarely negative, but Andre does not have NHL skills( not even as an enforcer which we don't need with Tarnasky and O'Brien).Another D would help(or a great G)Thanks TBL

Well...on a positive note, the year after the Lightning lost to New Jersey in the playoffs, the bolts went on to win the stanley cup. Not that it means anything but I'm trying to be optimistic about the whole situation.
