Scholarships available from alumnae chapter Clearwater Alumnae Panhellenic hosted its annual Premier Night fundraiser on March 1 at the Largo Cultural Center, featuring the play My Fair Lady. Funds from this event will be used to donate scholarships to sorority girls who are registered at a university and are from the Pinellas and Pasco counties. Information and applications for scholarships are available from their local alumnae chapter or by contacting the Clearwater Alumnae Panhellenic scholarship chairman, Becky Conkling at (727) 787 0750. Clothes to Kids names new advisory board Clothes To Kids Inc., an organization that provides new and quality used clothing to low income, schoolchildren in Pinellas County, free of charge, has announced their newly formed Community Advisory Board. Members are: Ed Armstrong, attorney, Johnson, Pope, Boker, Ruppel and Burns, LLP; Ray Bouchard, president, Bouchard Insurance; Jim Coates, sheriff, Pinellas County; Maureen Freaney, director, Pinellas County Human Services; Jim Fulp, executive vice president, Raymond James Financial; Jim Harpham, past corporate president, GTE Wireless; Frank Hibbard, mayor, of Clearwater; Bill Mischler, mayor of Pinellas Park; Sallie Parks and Jane Rutenburg, community activists; Donna Sicilian, supervisor, Pinellas County Schools social worker; Rita Wesley, special assistant, St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce; and Clayton Wilcox, superintendent, Pinellas County Schools. The board will meet twice a year and serve CTK by being a spokesperson to the community and lend guidance and advice to the CTK store and organization. Scholarship winners at Historical Society The Pinellas County Historical Society named Zanetta Starkes and Diane Wakeman as the recipients of the annual Scholarship Award at its annual dinner on Jan. 19. Zanetta Starkes is a 1996 American Studies graduate of Eckerd College, and currently a Florida studies graduate assistant at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg campus. Her current projects include activities at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum in St. Petersburg. Diane Wakeman is currently working on her master's thesis on the culture, tradition and environment of Florida oystering. She is also involved in the Modern Florida History Project through the Florida Humanities Council. She received an undergraduate degree in English at Florida Gulf Coast University in 2004. Newcomers, friends club installs officers The Palm Harbor Newcomers Alumnae and Friends Club installed these officers at their March 1 monthly luncheon meeting at East Lake Woodlands Country Club, Oldsmar: Theresa Smith , president; first vice president Katherine Donahue; second vice presidents Pat Daily, Pat Smith, Barbara Ward; recording secretary Pat Walsh; corresponding secretary Joann Clark; and treasurer Lorraine Viegut. The installing officer was member Ana Prestel. The club also awarded its annual donations to the Palm Harbor Community Activity Center, The Haven, a domestic violence center, the Florida Suncoast Hospice and F.E.A.S.T., of Palm Harbor. The club is a social club which meets monthly, however it also fulfills its dedication to the needs of the community through monies raised by club members. Club's partnership in Dunedin plants trees Over 18 years ago, the Bay Bouquet Garden Club of Dunedin joined forces with the City of Dunedin to create the "Adopt-A-Tree" program. Since then, more than $60,000 has been donated, helping Dunedin to establish and maintain its Tree City USA status. The club holds four annual tree planting events per year, but was recently invited to extend the Adopt-A-Tree program for landscaping the new Community Center. Thanks to the generosity of Dunedin area residents, more than $7,500 has been donated, allowing for the planting of more than 50 trees. Bay Bouquet Garden Club is proud of forming this partnership with the City of Dunedin and continue to receive phone calls and donations for the Community Center Adopt-A-Tree project. Soroptimist names women award winners Soroptimist International of Upper Pinellas County recently announced winners of its 32nd annual Women Honoring Women Award, which is presented to women who excel in their chosen professions while also enhancing their communities. This year's winners were honored at a luncheon on Saturday, March 10 at the Clearwater Country Club. The winners are: Diana Carsey, business; Carmen Wilson, community service; Chary Southmayd, journalism; and Debra Sullivan, government. Rebecca Grenewicz received the Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Award, a scholarship that helps women who are single and heads of households to complete their education, and the Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award for outstanding high school student community service went to Rebekah Hammond, Youth Governor - Florida YMCA Youth in Government. Rotary Club plans big 60th year fundraiser During the past 10 years, the Rotary Club of Dunedin has donated more than $290,000 to a variety of organizations, including the Dunedin Fine Arts Center, Adopt-A-Family, Literacy Council of Upper Pinellas, Watson Center, Boy Scouts and Children's Home Society. To celebrate the club's 60th anniversary, its members have pledged an additional $50,000 for scholarships to high school students who live in Dunedin. The campaign kicked off last month and has already received more than $15,000 in cash and pledges. This additional amount will go into an endowment fund which will allow the club to donate more for Dunedin Scholarships each year.
