High school athletes get free physicals

Next month , Morton Plant Mease physicians, certified athletic trainers and physical therapists will provide free physicals to Pinellas County high school student athletes preparing for next year. Physicals will include checks of height, weight, blood pressure, vision, lungs and a musculoskeletal exam. Also, students who are found to have an irregular heart condition, such as a murmur, or those students who request an additional check of their heart will be offered free cardiac screening using an electrocardiogram or echocardiogram an ultrasound of the heart. The physicals are scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon May 5 at the Ptak Orthopaedic & Neuroscience Pavilion, 430 Morton Plant St., Clearwater; and 8 a.m. to noon May 19 at Palm Harbor University High School, 1900 Omaha St. Morton Plant Mease will provide the athletic physicals free, but individual schools may request a $15 fee to support booster clubs.

Register now for kindergarten

Parents of children who will begin kindergarten Aug. 21 may register at their child's assigned school through May 4. Here are the required documents: the child's birth certificate, proof of residency, certificate of immunization, report from a physical exam that is no more than a year old and the letter from student assignment with the child's school listed. Those who applied for a school assignment during the attendance area application period last month were to be notified last week of the child's school. Parents who did not apply before the March 24 deadline must call or visit a Family Education and Information Center at 1101 Marshall St., Clearwater, (298-2858) or 3420 Eighth Ave. S, St. Petersburg, (552-1595).

Students 8-17 can get free flights

The local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association will once again provide free flights to students 8 to 17 through the association's Young Eagles program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 12 at the Clearwater Airpark, 1000 N Hercules Ave. Last year the association's local chapter flew more 160 kids. Since 1992, the program has given the experience of flying to more than 1.1-million young people. The pilots volunteer their time and aircraft and provide their own fuel.
