TAMPA - It should be no surprise Ruslan Fedotenko will not be back next season. The Lightning wing, an unrestricted free agent, dressed but did not play in Game 5 against the Devils and was scratched in Game 6.
That after scoring 12 regular-season goals, 14 fewer than 2005-06, and only one in his past 29 games.
"I don't think I'm coming back here," Fedotenko said. "That's pretty obvious. Both parties agree to move on and close a chapter. Now I'm excited about what is going to happen next."
Fedotenko, 28, was one of the stars of the 2004 Stanley Cup run in which he scored a team-high 12 goals, including two in the title-clinching Game 7 over the Flames.
"It's disappointing," said general manager Jay Feaster, who gave the No. 4 pick in the 2002 draft to the Flyers for Fedotenko. "It got off the track this season and was never able to get back on. He won a Stanley Cup here, and that's something special, and he'll always have a special place in the organization's heart."
How he feels about coach John Tortorella is likely another matter. Even Tortorella said, "I don't think he's too crazy about me," after Game 5.
"Everybody has this conspiracy theory that I was out to get him," Tortorella continued. "Was I upset with his play? Yes. Did I plan to dress him and not play him in a game? No. He was given plenty of opportunity in the regular season and the playoffs. It didn't materialize, and I needed to make a change."
PRATT SURGERY: Defenseman Nolan Pratt said he played the final two months of the season with a sports hernia that will require surgery.
The procedure will be done in Munich, Germany, by Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck, whose technique of repairing the damage while not cutting through surrounding muscle is supposed to greatly reduce recovery time.
Pratt, who did not miss a game because of the injury but against the Devils was getting injections to ease the pain, said he likely would not have played if the playoffs continued.
Still, he averaged 14:31 of ice time and fought Jamie Langenbrunner in Game 5.
"That," Pratt said, "made everything worse."
"That's why he plays," Tortorella said, "because he finds a way, versus why some guys didn't play and don't find a way."
TAYLOR WANTS MORE: Captain Tim Taylor said surgery on his degenerative right hip condition likely will be in August, and he wants to play after an expected six-month rehab. Feaster said Taylor will get every opportunity to return.
ODDS AND ENDS: Defenseman Cory Sarich, an unrestricted free agent, stands to get a big bump from the $1.9-million he made this season, and that is more than the Lightning can afford. ... Upping his stock in the playoffs was center Andreas Karlsson, who benefited from Fedotenko's benching and some behind-the-scenes lobbying of Tortorella by Marty St. Louis. ... The Lightning has offered bruising forward Evgeny Artyukhin, who played this season in Russia, a $475,000 one-way contract.

I like that Torts isn't afraid to sugarcoat his team's performance to anyone. What does being Mr. Rogers have to do with winning? With the ability to go above & beyond? With anything in hockey for that matter? Professionals accept responsibility

Coaching Sports is not a popularity contest. A coach needs to call it like he sees it. If you are not putting out like the rest of your team mates you need to hear about it. Anyone who has played organized sports should understand this. No I in team!

Gabe, with all due respect, you have no clue. If you were aware of 1/2 of what went in this past season, you would agree.Tort is "Mr. Rogers" in public compared to his other persona.

You guys have got to be kidding about firing Torts and/or Feaster. The Bolts were a basement team before he got here. These guys are professionals and if they arent tough enough to publicly take criticism from Torts, I dont want them on our team.

I hope Feds can find a good fit somewhere else. He's a great player when his game is on. Getting Artyukhin back is good. I'd hate to see Sarich go, but would like to see him be more physical next year if he stays.

Tort- it is time to leave Tampa- You have embarrassed us, and broken the spirit of many young men. The TBL has been successful, not because of you, but DESPITE you! And Feaster, better wise up or you may be next!

Well it seems like he no longer needs to criticize the likes of St. Louis,Cavs, or Richards. They play hard every night and they get "it." You can't say that about the other guys. He just wants their best. Effort = Respect.

Losing Feds and Sarich will help our salary cap, but do we have enough $ to get a top goalie like FA Giguere? Without a top goalie, we'll never beat the likes of Jersey and N.Y. Rangers. Until that happens, we'll continue our path as 1st round flops.

Said it before the players don't deserve a public dressing down. Professionalism should be part of the job Torts. Still think with some adjustments with the current guys the outcome may have been a little different. Boyle is a forward. Coach Coach.

Firing Tortorella? Are you kidding? Feds play this season was humiliation enough, Tortorella was merely stating the obvious trying to wake this guy up, didnt work, oh well seeya...but he will be remembered for the 2 biggest goals in bolt history

I'll miss Feds.
I hope this time Arty gives 100% as a fore-checking and puck shooting maniac. Not drifting around like a burly Alexeev in between bad penalties.
Listen to the Coach, Kid.
I bet he's gone before New Year's. Anyone?

Tortorella wasn't a Lightning staff member in Vinny's rookie year. Jacques Demers was coach. Suffice it to say, Torts is like Herb Brooks -- might not be popular but he brings results.

It's pretty stupid to dress a player you don't intend to play in a playoff game.Karl Stewart who led the league in hits when he got here might have helped.Feds would have gotten the same message from the press box.GOOD LUCK FEDS-thx for the memories!

Torts is getting out of hand. Go coach in the NFL. Players there talk back! Ruslan deserved better. But just like Grahame, he never made a bad comment about Torts. Some people have class and some don't. Torts could learn from the players.

So long, Rusty. Thanks for the memories of 2004. Bring on Arty. Can you imagine him flying around on a line with Nick "Tarnasty?"

How many interviews has Torts ended with "Is he mad with me, I'm sure he is"
I believe it dates back to Vinnie's rookie year...

Has anyone noticed that the coach has continuous personnel problems with his players? What is wrong with these guys? Can't they take dire humiliation in the media at Tortorella's hands and deal with his childish eccentricities? Where is the love?
