NEW PORT RICHEY - Wendy Wiley has spent 18 years married to a man who cannot tie his shoes or pour himself a drink, who twice kicked a state trooper with his one good leg, who refused to let the loss of both arms stop him from becoming one of Pasco County's most notorious traffic violators. She fed him. Dressed him. Took the blame when he fled from a crash. She raised their daughter while he was in prison. She stood by him till the day he attacked her. Now prosecutors want to send Michael Wiley to prison for five years on drug and illegal-driving charges. And his wife is on their side. "I'd like to see him get the five years," Wendy Wiley said last week. "If not more." Michael Wiley, 40, is scheduled to go to trial on those felony charges June 25. In the meantime, he pleaded no contest last week to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct in connection with a July 8, 2006, battery on his wife. He was put on misdemeanor probation. According to a deputy's report, the two were arguing over a license tag in their home on San Miguel Drive in Port Richey when he head-butted her and had to be restrained by their daughter's boyfriend. He moved out soon after that. His wife says he now has a girlfriend and a powerful drug addiction. Wiley, who lost his limbs at age 13 after an accident involving an electrical transformer, drives by guiding the key into the ignition with his mouth, turning it with the toes on his right foot, and spinning the steering wheel with the stump of his left arm. He has been pulled over and either cited or arrested at least 45 times since 1984, and his license has been suspended or revoked at least 19 times. But judges have given him light sentences, and he is so difficult to care for in jail that he is often released without having to post bail. Despite the plea deal on the disorderly conduct charge, Wiley has more than one criminal case pending. Deputies say they caught him behind the wheel with illegal drugs in May and June of last year. At a pretrial conference Monday in the New Port Richey courthouse, he wore carpenter jeans and a short-sleeved shirt with the sleeves hanging empty. His face was covered in red-gray stubble. He waited until Circuit Judge William Webb scheduled his trial, and then he walked out with help from his prosthetic left leg. When a reporter approached him in the hallway, he backed away. "I don't have nothing to say to you," he said, and slipped into the elevator. Later that day, the reporter asked Wiley's lawyer, John Hooker of Tampa, how Wiley had gotten to and from the courthouse. Hooker said that Wiley's girlfriend or his father had driven him to past hearings. But neither one was in court with him Monday. "I didn't even ask," Hooker said. "I'm sure he didn't drive." Without a doubt, he's the only person I've ever heard of who assaulted an officer & served no appreciable time. Why is it so hard to care for him? Lock him in a cell like you would anyone else. The PUBLIC is being discriminated against!JUSTICE,please

Many have been put away for far less! Remember, this guy is a violent offender. Assisted living facilities are not a place for him, nor do they want him! Think of the helpless people that live in assisted living facilities that are law abiding.

This is amazing, but then again, we have people who can't see, can't hear, and have the reaction time of a concrete block driving around all the time. Not to mention the drunks, like the one who killed my son on his FOURTH DUI - logic here? NOT !!!

All I want to know is, how did he get his license in the first place. Who was his driving instructor. He needas to be fired and go to jail along with Wiley. There's no way in hell I would give a person with no limbs a driver's license.

I he needs to time in jail to think about the dangers that he pose when he is behind the wheel. He doesn't have any arms that is very dangerous I couldn't imagine someone on the road beside me driving without limbs. This story is unbelieveable

So... lets just wait until he kills someone before we lock him up - some poor innocent - of course he wouldn't kill himself. How can Mr. Hooker be so sure he didn't drive himself to the hearing -if he personally didn't take him to the hearing?

License was "suspended or revoked" 45 times (including 2x with illegal drugs). I have to assume he can drive well enough to get one in the first place. At what point does his driving "privilege" be revoked for life? Insurance? Doubtful. Jail? YES!!

For those of you keeping score: assault on an officer, domestic assault, illegal drugs in car (2x), cited or arrested 45x, license suspended/revoked 19x (he was able to get one?) Car insurance? doubtful..This man is lucky he's ONLY facing 5 years!

Who has to die in an accident caused by this guy before he gets locked up? Why is he being allowed such leniency when he is constantly breaking the law? Please get him off the streets and put him in prison where he belongs.

He's been given enough leeway over the past 2 decades. He isn't above the law just because of his disability. He abused the special treatment he got and broke the law several times. Put him away.

He may be pathetic and have needs, but we the public need him off the roads - if he won't, then off to jail he should go. Don't let him play on our sympathies.

Just maybe Mr. Hooker needs to ask these types of questions of his defendant. How did Mr. Wiley get to court then? I doubt he took a bus either! I bet the scum drove himself! It's fools such as this that cause my insurance rates to be so high!

It only seems human to treat this man for his handicaps, private enterprise of our local government fit him with artificial limbs and he become a contributing character to the community. It is obvious he is not ignorant just handicapped.
