Volunteers needed for child mentoring

Gulf Coast Community Care needs volunteers age 30 and older for its mentoring program.

Volunteers are matched with children of all ages throughout Pinellas County who need a positive adult role model. Many of the children are in foster care or live with a single parent who is going to school and working.

Volunteers receive formal orientation and training, then spend a few hours a week with a child in simple activities such as reading, fishing, baking, arts and crafts, sports or visiting a park. No experience is necessary. There are no costs. Professional case managers follow matches to assure a positive experience for both the children and the volunteers.

To learn how you can make a difference in the life of a child, call Beverly at 479-1841 or Bonnie at 479-1825.

This prom isn't for the high school set

It's a prom for a different kind of seniors. Officials at the Princess Martha are inviting older residents to attend the "Memories of the Way We Were" event from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

They encourage folks to dust off prom wear and prepare to listen to three decades' worth of music. The dance, featuring music by the Charley Mathews Band, is free and open to the public; it will take place at the apartment community, 411 First Ave. N, St. Petersburg.

Call 894-6788.
