Training is offered for volunteer police force

The Pinellas Park Police Department is seeking residents to join its volunteer ranks.

The department requires that volunteers pass a background check and complete 13 weeks of training, which covers police procedures and traffic control.

Trained volunteers are empowered to assist in issuing citations to motorists who illegally park in handicapped spaces.

The department trains about 40 new volunteers each year and law enforcement background is not required.

In addition to assisting with traffic management issues, volunteers may be trained to work in the records, administration and communications sections of the department as well as join the horseback patrol.

Individuals interested in joining the volunteer unit should contact Officer Donna Saxer at 541-0761.
