Wine cellar restaurant seeks new location

The Wine Cellar property is for sale. The restaurant won't close, but it will move.

Members of the ownership group that operates the 32-year-old restaurant are nearing retirement and want to cash out the land value of their 2 acres at 17307 Gulf Blvd.

However, the group wants to keep the business, according to Tom Reynolds, the attorney handling the transaction. Karl Klumpp, Ted Sonnenshein and Peter Shuckert are selling the Wine Cellar corporation, which owns the land, instead of the land itself because the all-stock transaction will simplify their tax planning. They are negotiating now with several parties on the nonwaterfront land, for which they are asking $7.125-million. Once the sale is closed, they plan to move the restaurant to a still-undecided Pinellas County location. Zoning on the land could allow a hotel, retail or condominiums.

Frog Pond opens new location today

The Frog Pond's new southern location is ready. After several months of preparation and $300,000 in renovations, the North Redington Beach institution known for its enormous omelettes and eggs Benedict opens today at 7390 Gulf Blvd., at Corey Avenue. The new site has 70 seats, similar decor, but the same menu as its 25-year-old parent up north. The owners were aiming to open last month but decided to do more extensive upgrades to plumbing and electrical systems that will last at least as long as their 15-year lease on the property. Hours for the new store are the same as the old: 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday. Call 363-7205.
