Mustangs like their chances

This year Mitchell has more than doubled the number of athletes going to the Class 4A regional.
"Last year we had two, so in my coaching experience this is good for us," coach Tim Masterson said. "For us it is a lot better than last year, a lot better."
Mitchell will send five athletes in seven events this year. The Mustangs' standout, Latoya Hillmon, should run the 400 meters as well as throw the shot. Hillmon, who injured her leg last week, was the most likely to move on to state, but wasn't at practice Wednesday.
"Latoya will go to states if she is healthy; she hurt her leg playing basketball," Masterson said. "We will see how she runs, but she's a competitor. She's all there."
School record holder in the high jump, Katie Young jumped 4 feet, 10 inches in the district meet. Young, however, will need to get closer to her record-setting 5-3 to move on to state.
"I think that Young will do her best (today); she always seems to thrive where there is high competition," Masterson said. "Her mental state will affect whether or not she can do it."
Based on last week's results from the other three districts that merge for today's region meet, a high jump of 5-2, which Young has hit many times, could win the meet. A 5-3, which she got earlier this season on her birthday, would mean a certain trip to state.
"I'm excited; I am very ready," Young said. "My biggest challenge is going to be keeping my thoughts focused on what I'm doing but not what I'm doing. You can't think too much and you can't think too little."
Rebekah Stockowski will compete in the 100-meter hurdles, while Lyndsey Smith and Christina Makris will throw the discus. Throwing coach Kristi Taraschke said for her girls to get to state, a 100-foot throw seems necessary. Makris and Smith threw 94-6.5 and 86-06.5 in district competition, respectively.
"It's a lot of focus and concentration," Taraschke said. "Discus is mainly technique, and in order to do that you have to focus and make sure you are getting your steps down right. Physically they are strong enough."
