Funky, jazzy flute

Published April 26, 2007

Flute players and fans of the instrument will want to hear Robert Dick, whose fabulous technique has been compared to that of Paganini and Jimi Hendrix. Dick has made more than 20 CDs, ranging from Telemann standards to free-form jazz, and his latest release, with pianist Ursel Schlicht, is the uncommonly adventurous Photosphere (Nemu Records). Dick is known for playing unusual flutes he designed, such as a giant contrabass flute and the Glissando Headjoint, which does for the flute what the "whammy bar" does for electric guitar. As part of the Emit series, Dick and Schlicht will perform selections from their CD and other music at 8 p.m. today at the St. Petersburg College Music Center, 6605 Fifth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. $8, $10. (727) 341-4363; www.emitseries.org. Dick will give a free flute workshop at 4 p.m. at the Music Center.
