Lions Club site wins historic designation

BRANDON: The County Commission has designated a single-story, wood-frame building at 610 Limona Road as a historical landmark. The building has served as the clubhouse for the Brandon chapter of the Lions Club since the 1950s.

The Lions Club had considered applying for the designation for the structure since 2003, and started the application in 2005. Historic landmark properties must be at least 50 years old. Owners are eligible for tax breaks when they improve the properties.

The structure was built in 1928 as the headquarters for the Limona Improvement Association after fire destroyed the group's first building. The Lions Club took over in 1954. It is listed in the county's historic resources inventory, which notes places of interest in unincorporated Hillsborough.

SEFFNER: The County Commission on Tuesday approved townhouses and houses on 85 acres at the northeast corner of Williams Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Owners Charles and Louise Springer needed to change the property's agricultural zoning to a planned development.

Neighbors argued that the proposed units would abut too many homes to be compatible with the area. But the developer lowered a request for multifamily units from 776 to 650 and agreed to make the dwellings on the perimeter houses instead of townhouses. Seven wetland acres will not be developed. Petition 06-1681

SEFFNER: Commissioners approved planned development zoning for Wheeler Ridge, a 57-house subdivision on 19 acres northwest of Wheeler and Valrico roads. Residents will enter the site through Wheeler Road. Petition 06-1938
