TAMPA - Only one area athlete qualified for state from Thursday's Class 4A, Region 2 meet at Gaither. Mitchell's Latoya Hillmon ran a time of 1:00.02 in the 400-meter dash, just edging Vero Beach's Meyonka Gray (1:00.34) to pick up third place. Buoyed by Hillmon's finish, Mitchell finished in a tie for 18th on the girls side with 11 points. Vero Beach finished as the region champion with 80 points, 10 better than second-place Gaither. Melbourne was third with 56 points Sarasota Riverview (74 points) captured the boys title, also by a 10-point margin. Coming in second was Riverview (64) and third belonged to Lakeland (62). No boys from the area qualified for state, which takes the top four finishers from each event. Bryan Burns, Times correspondent
