WINTER PARK - Tampa Prep's Chris Friedrich prefers to wait until the last possible moment to unleash his kick.
But in the opening leg of the 4x800-meter relay, Friedrich had to maintain the same searing pace as his challengers.
It was a different tactic, one that left Friedrich out of gas at the end.
The result was a personal-best 1 minute, 59.7 seconds.
Teammates Dan Pariseau, Aaron Koch and Stephen Warner kept things going, helping the Terrapins finish fifth in the 4x800 in a school-record 8:23.
"I was very satisfied with the way things went in that race, " Friedrich said. "Everything just felt good.
"We went out early and the pace was quick. I was able to keep up for the most part."
Friedrich also took seventh in the 800 (1:59.7).
"(The 800) wasn't a personal record, but I'm not disappointed, especially after the way I ran in the 4x800, " Friedrich said.
On the girls side, Tampa Prep's Tawsha Asher was sixth in the 800 (2:23.84).
Those were the only place-winners from Hillsborough County.
The top performance in the area came from Shorecrest's Samantha Specht.
The sophomore was second in the triple jump and 400 and ran anchor legs on the 4x800 and 4x400 relay teams that each finished third.
The Chargers were fifth overall with 35 points.
