CLEARWATER - Alonso junior Alex Panteliodis threw a four-hit, complete-game shutout against Gaither as the Ravens won their first district title. The victory also marked the 100th win in Ravens baseball history.
Alonso's Tommy Toledo homered to right center in the first inning, scoring Sherman Johnson, who reached on a walk to give the Ravens a 2-0 lead.
"The jump out early gave us a great confidence boost, " Toledo said. "I tried to put the ball in play, and this time good things happened."
In the top of the second, Gaither responded with a would-be home run by Michael Fernandez, only to have Fernandez called out for not stepping on first base. The Cowboys struggled to find hits and capitalize on base runners as Panteliodis struck out seven for the Ravens.
"I think that home run that got called back at first base broke our back a little bit, " Gaither coach Frank Permuy said. "I think that took a little wind out of our sails."
The Ravens scored again in the second inning on a two-run double by Chris Freshcorn and an RBI single by Panteliodis. Panteliodis also drove in Grant Gajdosz in the sixth inning for the Ravens' final run.
Alonso looked sharp defensively as well, turning two double plays with runners in scoring position, including a nice diving catch by Toledo to start a double play to end the fifth inning.
