TAMPA - Technically, he enters today's Class 2A meet as the defending state champion in the 400 meters. But whether Jesuit senior Hunter Clasen actually tries any defending remains to be seen.
Still nursing what coach Ray Rodriguez describes as a strained left hip flexor, Clasen's status for his specialty race today in Winter Park remains probable.
"Right now I want to say it's unlikely he'll sit out but not totally out of the question, " said Rodriguez, seeking a top-five team finish for the Tigers today at Showalter Field.
"We're taking it day by day. There has been a little improvement, but not as much as we would like. ...We've heard everything from 'Take five weeks off, ' to 'See how it feels that day.' "
Clasen, who has signed a track scholarship with Georgia Tech, injured the knee during the 200-meter finals at last week's Region 3 meet. Earlier, he had won the 400 in 48.64 seconds.
In the preliminaries of the 200, he ran a converted time of 21.76 - a school record.
During limited training this week, Rodriguez said Clasen has shown modest progress, but still is running with a limp.
"It's just very tight, " Rodriguez said.Joey Knight can be reached at (813) 226-3350 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
