Team Mutual Fun captained by John Akers of Duluth, Ga., caught a 28-pound, 7-ounce kingfish to win the Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Series tournament Saturday at Marina Jack in Sarasota. Akers and teammates Phil Voelkel of Indianapolis, Jason Capra of Palm Harbor and Don Amsden of Lafayette, Ind., won $30, 000.

The spot: Fishing a 29-foot center console, the winners targeted a patch of natural hard bottom in 45 feet of water 15 miles southwest of Sarasota. Several days of prefishing yielded enough insight for the team to boat 11 kings Saturday.

The bait: The winning team slow-trolled live baits. Their biggest kingfish ate a live blue runner on a downrigger at 11:45 a.m. Voelkel fought the fish and Capra gaffed it. Akers said his team decided to move to a new spot after boating a 20-pound fish. They moved about 5 miles west to what would be the winning location.

Best of the rest: Team Baitmaster finished second with a 26-pound, 8-ounce kingfish, Team Julie Marie took third with 26 pounds, 1 ounce, Team Thunder 1 placed fourth with 25 pounds, 8 ounces and Team Kora was fifth with 24 pounds, 7 ounces. Jared Fuller of Team Fishing Dreams was the event's top youth angler. Team Kora's Cindi Roush was the top female angler.

Redfish tournament: Elsewhere, John Jernigan of Venice and Chris Joseph of Holmes Beach won the Wal-Mart FLW Redfish Series Eastern Division event at Stump Pass in Englewood.
