TAMPA - More than 24 hours after a bullet from a .25-caliber pistol pierced through his abdomen, a Hillsborough sheriff's detective remained in critical but stable condition Sunday. Detective Christopher Baumann, a veteran narcotics investigator who was shot during an undercover drug bust Saturday, was recovering from surgery at Tampa General Hospital, Sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway said. "He was shot in the abdomen and it caused some internal damage, " Callaway said. "But we believe the surgeons have taken care of that. ... He actually seems to be doing a little bit better." DeAndre Jamal Wallace, the 18-year-old who deputies say shot Baumann, was released from Tampa General on Sunday afternoon and booked into the Falkenburg Road Jail. He was in the jail's infirmary, recovering from a gunshot wound in his upper right chest. He is charged with two counts of attempted murder. Other charges include carrying a concealed firearm, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence. Hillsborough sheriff's deputies continued to search Sunday for a teen who sold crack to undercover deputies shortly before Wallace approached the undercover car and brandished a gun, according to a sheriff's report. The undercover deputies left the scene and called for backup from Baumann and Detective Tracey Balogh. According to the sheriff's report, Baumann chased the drug seller around the house, where Wallace confronted Baumann, shooting at least four times. Balogh fired back, hitting Wallace in the chest. Wallace fled, throwing his weapon into a nearby back yard, according to the Sheriff's Office. While deputies combed neighborhoods searching for Wallace, an attorney representing Wallace contacted authorities and negotiated his surrender. Catherine E.
