Master Sgt. Shaleina M. Rivera, a 16-year old sophomore in the JROTC program at Clearwater High School, recently earned a medal, a $100 check and a Certificate of Merit from the National Organization of The Military Officers Association of America.

Rivera has a grade point average of 3.3 and plans to enter the Marine Corps when she graduates from high school.

She is the daughter of Mrs. Carmen Rivera.

Air Force Airman Mark J. Turner graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate's degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

He is the son of Lori Chestnut of Bainbridge, Ga., and Mark Turner Sr. of Dunedin.

Turner is a 2003 graduate of Bainbridge High School.

Army Pvt. Stephen M. Detty graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Knox, Ky.

During nine-weeks of training, the private received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions, and core values.

Detty is the son of Cheryl Arantz-Bulford of Largo.

The private is a 2004 graduate of Largo High School.
