Stanton steps closer to Sarasota job

He is one of 18 finalists for the city manager position. Officials will narrow it down this week.

Published May 1, 2007

Steve Stanton, who submitted his resume as Susan A. Stanton, has made the first cut for Sarasota's city manager job.

About 40 people applied for the position. Stanton is one of 18 finalists selected by the Mercer Group, a firm helping Sarasota with the search.

The Sarasota City Commission will meet this week to choose five top picks and three alternates, said city spokeswoman Jan Thornburg. Commissioners are scheduled to interview their top picks and choose a new manager this month.

Thornburg said the ideal candidate would have experience managing a city about the size of Sarasota and have excellent communication skills.

Stanton, who was fired as Largo's city manager a month after revealing he planned to become a woman, said in a letter to the Mercer Group that he expected some "initial sensationalized interest by the national media" because of his gender transition, but believed that would be short-lived.

Stanton served as city manager of Largo, which has 76, 000 residents, for 14 years. Sarasota has a population of about 55, 000.

Stanton, who has a 12-month severance package, made $140, 234 a year. The salary range for the Sarasota job is $155, 000 to $180, 000 a year.

Other applicants still in the running include city managers from Peekskill, N.Y., Delafield, Wis., and Sunrise, and a Sarasota deputy county administrator.
