ST. PETERSBURG - Will Crispell and JoJo Hess are the veterans of Northside Christian's pitching staff, the foundation of the Mustangs' district run.
Crispell, a senior transfer from Keswick Christian, is 5-3 with two key wins against state-ranked Shorecrest, including one in the district semis. Hess, a junior, is 5-2 and had a streak of 20 scoreless innings this season.
"We form a really good tandem, " Crispell said.
It wasn't always this way. Last season, Crispell hit a home run that helped Keswick knock off Northside in the district semifinals. As he rounded the bases, Crispell mumbled something to Hess.
"I just nodded and said, 'What's up?' " Crispell said.
"I didn't like him after that, " Hess said. "Then he became my teammate and things were okay."
Crispell will start today against Fort Myers Evangelical Christian. Hess likely will be used in relief.
