VENICE - The formula for success against Northeast's Josh Bowman is to balance patience with aggression. The deal is to wait for the moment of opportunity and not waste a second seizing it.
It's a formula that can't be followed any more perfectly than Venice did in beating the Vikings 4-0 in the Class 5A region quarterfinals.
Bowman worked a scoreless first inning. There was a strikeout and silent screams by the Indians, but also a fair degree of studying going on. Timing Bowman's pitches was becoming easier, and so the scoreboard zeroes were about to become an endangered species.
When the second inning arrived, so did the end for Northeast.
Venice scored all four runs in the inning off three hits, the biggest a two-run triple by Brady McLean. Worse, Bowman also had a line drive ricochet off his leg before the inning was over.
Bowman, who missed more than a month of the season with a sore right shoulder, got into rhythm and finished with 12 strikeouts.
